I was once a visiting guest to a U.C.L.A. orchestral rehearsal. Afterwards, the Conductor asked everyone to stay for a demonstration of a unique instrument called the "Chapman Stick" by its Inventor Emmett Chapman. It was my first experience of this remarkable instrument and Chapman. Years later, I was house-hunting, and one of the places I saw was a basement dwelling which turned out to be where Chapman lived and invented the Stick.
